Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computers, today announced Apple’s entry into the mobile phone market, with the iPhone, a revolutionary new handset based on OS X.
Features revealed so far include a 3.5 inch LCD screen with a resolution of 160 pixels per inch, a touch interface which does not require the use of a stylus, full integration with existing Apple software, support for Widgets, and the ability to play videos from the iTunes Store. It also has both wifi and bluetooth connections, is quad band compatible (meaning that it can be used is Asia, Europe and America) and has a 2 megapixal camera built in.
The phone is also compatible with a number of email and online features including Rich HTML and POP email forwarding. Safari is included as standard and the phone has the ability to access Google Maps. All iPhones also come with a free imap email account thanks to a partnership between Apple and Yahoo.
Full screen websites can be loaded in Safari on the iPhone. During the keynote, Jobs demonstrated this by access the New York Times website from his handset.
The iPhone will be released in June of 2007 with a 4GB and and 8GB model. These will be priced at $499 and $599 respectively with a two year contract on the Cingular network. A European launch will take place in Q4 of 2007. EU pricing and network provision is TBA.
